In this book, Mary Pope Osborne tells the drool of a immature Quaker girl named Catharine who lived during the time of the French and Indian war. The story is mainly about Catharine and her companion Thomas, who were taken from their family by Indians composition they were walking to school. The Indians that took them were known as the Lenape Indians. The children were separated and Catharine was given to a wo world named White Owl, and Thomas was given to a man named Black Snake. They let Catharine keep her diary and she was able to frame in it while she was held captive. The Indians hard-boiled Catharine and Thomas well. They were taught the Indian ways. later on a few months had passed, British soldiers came marching close to the Lenape camp. Catharine and her brother were hidden in a rock shelter by White Owl to keep them safe. After the soldiers passed they returned back to their camp.

The British however, eventually found them. The siblings saw how badly the British treated the Lenape, as they called White Owl names and beat her in front of them. They were then given over to somewhat traders expiry by who returned Catharine and Thomas back to their family.
The most interesting lay out of the book was when they learned the Indian ways like fishing and how to treat illnesses with the herbs around them. Thomas learned how to speak some Indian and was eventually able to communicate with them effectively.
